Everyone is looking at SARs at €200. Meanwhile, Art Rares (ARs) are quietly rising. Most trade between €1 and €10. Some have seen hundreds of percent increases in a year. We'll show you what really drives a card's price, and how to avoid pitfalls.
What is an AR? A full-card illustration of a Pokémon, without textured borders or glitter. Beautiful, accessible artwork: neither a common card nor an overpriced chase card. Note: unlike the Japanese market (approximately 3 ARs per display), no official pull rate is communicated for French products.
1. Most ARs cost a few euros, and that's normal
The average AR goes for between €1 and €10. This is intentional: many of them are available. To start a collection or acquire beautiful pieces without breaking the bank, it's the ideal entry point. So why do some exceed €30?
2. An AR's price isn't JUST about the Pokémon
Let's immediately debunk a misconception. An AR doesn't just go up in price because of a specific Pokémon. Three things play a role:
- The series itself: some sets are more collected (nostalgia, print quality, popularity).
- A spotlight effect: the publisher releases a hit card and everyone snaps up the series.
- The artistic aspect: a successful composition, a striking scene, a recognized illustrator create demand, regardless of the Pokémon.

3. Beware of overexcitement and manipulation
Look at Gastly's curve again: a peak at €150, then a return to €106. In a niche market, a few buyers are enough to inflate a price before it drops again. Someone who buys at the peak loses a lot in a few days.
How to protect yourself:
- Look at the long-term history (180 days / 360 days), not the current peak.
- Be wary of a +40% increase in a few days without a reason (new release, event).
- Compare on a source that reflects your market.
